this is a central performance/interface question in electronic music, but bob ignores the disconnect between the performer -- who generally does feel viscerally connected to the music through whatever interface he or she is using -- and the audience -- for whom the lack of anything they can relate to visually may make them feel like the performer is not creating or playing the music (as playing has been traditionally understood). that is, the problem arguably is the audience's expectations, not the interface.
